From Concept to Scale: Motecha & Nordic Plast

In recent years, Nordic Plast SIA – one of the leading plastics recyclers in the Baltics – has made significant investments in technological upgrades to strengthen its position in polypropylene (PP) recycling. One of the key milestones was the implementation of a fully automated sorting and recycling line for post-consumer PP Big Bags, developed with engineering support from UAB Motecha.

Phase 1: Building the Foundation in Olaine (2022–2023)

The first stage of the project was carried out at Nordic Plast’s original facility in Olaine, Latvia.

Motecha was responsible for:

  • Technical flow design and engineering layout,

  • Equipment selection and configuration,

  • Integration of automated sorting technologies for accurate fraction separation and contamination removal.

The result was a high-capacity line capable of processing up to 300 tons of PP Big Bags per month, converting them into high-purity PP pellets ready for reuse in new packaging. This closed-loop process significantly increased recycling efficiency and material recovery, allowing Nordic Plast to meet growing market demands and quality requirements.

Phase 2: Expansion and Relocation to Jelgava (2024)

In 2024, Nordic Plast made a strategic move to relocate operations to a modern production site in Jelgava. Motecha was once again selected to lead the engineering side of this transition. The scope included:

  • Adapting existing technologies to a new layout,

  • Reconfiguring the material flow within a new space,

  • Ensuring long-term operational efficiency and future scalability.

It is important to note that Motecha was responsible solely for the engineering design and system integration, while the physical relocation and installation were handled by Nordic Plast.

Technology-Driven Results

This project led to a 30% increase in recycling capacity and established a closed-loop system for Big Bag recycling – from waste to high-quality pellets, ready for reuse. The new facility in Jelgava now operates with an optimized layout designed for smooth process flow, ergonomic maintenance access, and high throughput.
